Who is this course for?

The HETAS H005DE course is aimed at renewable energy installers who wish to specify and install log, chip and pellet biomass systems in both domestic and commercial settings. The course focuses on appliances up to 45kW; however, the course content is also relevant for larger systems up to 100kW output.

What are the prerequisites?

  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Domestic Installation) or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Industrial and Commercial Installation) or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Oil-Fired Technical Services or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Gas Installation and Maintenance or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence.

A Water Regulations (WRAS) certificate or equivalent is also required.

Please note: Vocationally Related Qualifications (VRQs) including City & Guilds 6128, 6129 and 6132 technical certificates are not acceptable as an alternative to the NVQ awards listed above.

What are the aims of this course?

The H005DE Direct Entry course is designed specifically for installers who wish to specialise in the installation of biomass appliances. Biomass appliances and systems are becoming increasing complex and the H005DE course has been developed to provide candidates with the understanding, skill-set and confidence to carry out site assessments, installations, maintenance and commissioning on a range of biomass appliances with varying fuel types and delivery systems.

With the incorporation of HETAS H002 into the new H005DE qualification for biomass, the Solid Fuel Regulations & Standards course is no longer a prerequisite for installers wishing to undertake biomass training through HETAS. The new Direct Entry course has been designed to provide experienced plumbing and heating engineers with a single qualification which will develop their understanding of solid fuel regulations, flue systems and biomass installations and which is recognised by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme registration bodies as an acceptable qualification to join the scheme.

What subject areas will this course cover?

HETAS outlines the following subject areas and topics which are covered in the syllabus:

  • Fuel types, selection and storage
  • Principles of combustion
  • Appliance types and operating principles
  • Legislation, regulations and industry guidance
  • Flue systems for solid fuel appliances
  • Ventilation requirements
  • Flue and chimney inspection and testing
  • Biomass appliance selection
  • System sizing
  • Commissioning and decommissioning
  • Services and maintenance

What assessments are involved?

Candidates will be assessed using desk-based assessment papers, multiple choice examinations and practical assessments. Candidates will interact with a range of biomass and solid fuel appliances, undertake smoke tests and fault diagnosis in a variety of flue systems, as well as learn how to respond to unsafe situations.

Candidates with the HETAS H005 qualification can choose the 2-day Bridging Course which covers the biomass specific units in H005DE; this is an ideal route for installers with H005 seeking accreditation under MCS.

What do I need for this course?

All training manuals, technical handbooks and certification fees are included in the course fee, as well as a copy of the CIBSE Domestic Heating Design.

Trainees attending this course should bring evidence of their relevant qualifications and certificates to show the assessor. All candidates are required to bring two passport size photographs for the certification process. Safety footwear and overalls are also advisable.
